GC apprentices continue to learn during lockdown

As lockdown continues, apprentices at Gloucestershire College are continuing to learn. Apprentices on a range of courses from digital marketing to dental nursing are being taught remotely via online sessions, and are getting regular support from their training assessors. Following government guidelines, and where suitable for employers, the College also continues to deliver training to furloughed apprentices, to ensure their learning isn’t prohibited.

Gloucestershire College Launches New Flexible Apprenticeship Start Dates For Engineering and Construction

Traditionally for some apprenticeship areas such as Engineering and Construction, Gloucestershire College have only allowed new starters to join in September. The College will now have two entry dates for the next academic year, allowing apprentices to start in both September 2020 and January 2021.

Apprenticeship case study: Sydney Davies, Junior Stylist at Ashley Paul Hairdressing

Congratulations to Sydney Davies for passing her Level 2 Hair Professional Apprenticeship with Ashley Paul Hairdressing in Gloucester. Sydney started her apprenticeship with Gloucestershire College in September 2017 and was ready to complete her End Point Assessment when lockdown suddenly started, forcing the salon to temporarily close. On return to the salon in July, Sydney worked incredibly hard to get ready for her assessment in September, which she successful passed - even whilst wearing full PPE on one of the hottest days of the year! Ever wondered what it’s like returning to education as an adult? College isn’t just for school leavers, and at GC we have lots of part-time and evening courses for those looking to train for a new career, upskill in their current one, or simply to challenge themselves.

Anna was a science teacher for 25 years, working in schools and colleges across the county before she became a full-time carer for her father in 2017 and started studying accounting to keep her brain active.

Apprenticeship case study: Ben Carter, Apprentice Software Engineer at Iress

Gloucestershire College is proud to work with Iress to deliver training for their Software, IT Infrastructure and Cyber apprentices. Many of our apprentices with Iress have gone on to achieve distinctions in their programmes and progress to more senior roles within the company. Employer case study: Iress – Recruiting IT and cyber apprentices, even through a global pandemic

Taking on five new apprentices in October this year, Iress has successfully onboarded new Software Development Apprentices with Gloucestershire College despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic. The team at Iress have been working remotely since the start of March, which means their new apprentices are too. We caught up with Darcy Hibberd, People Partner for Talent Acquisition at Iress to share their experience of recruiting apprentices, how they have managed to work remotely and the impact apprenticeships have had on their business.

Congratulations to our 2020 graduates!

Around this time of year, we celebrate the achievements of our higher education graduates with a Higher Awards Ceremony in the grand setting of Gloucester Cathedral.

The anticipated event would have been our 30th annual celebration in 2020, however, due to the current pandemic, we are unable to celebrate in person. We are hopeful, COVID restrictions permitting, that we will be able to invite all of our 180 graduates to a ceremony in 2021.

We have all had to adapt rapidly this year. We now know that we can work from home or online from wherever we choose. Many professionals have reaped the rewards of this new flexible way of working, leaving hour-long commutes behind and enjoying a ‘new normal’ work-life balance. Traineeship success: First cohort will start work placements in the new year

The latest cohort of trainees at Gloucestershire College have successfully completed their eight-week training programme at the College and will be heading out on their employment placements in the new year. Find out more here.

Apprenticeship incentive payment scheme extended for employers

Back in July, the government announced new incentive payments for employers to encourage the recruitment of new apprentices. Originally planned to end on 31 January 2021, the incentive payments have now been extended to 31 March 2021. Find out more here.
