Technical Courses
There is more than one type of technical course available, this section will explain the differences.
BTEC
People who study a BTEC learn about a particular area of employment which can be useful in getting a job or going on to further study.
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas are equal to three A Levels but allow you to focus on the subject that you enjoy the most.
They should consider a BTEC if…
- They know what you want to do for a job.
- They enjoy being assessed through a range of methods including a portfolio and practical work.
They should consider alternatives if...
- They haven’t yet identified an industry that you’d like to work in.
- They want to keep a range of Higher Education options open.
NVQ
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) show that a person is competent in an area of work based on national occupational standards. They are usually worked towards via apprenticeships but some are available as full-time programmes at GC.
We offer Levels 2, 3 and 4 – equal to GCSE and Higher Education learning.
Your child should consider NVQs if...
- They want to show that you can carry out a job and do it well.
- They’re keen to work.
- They have a clear idea about the type of work that you’d like to do.
They should consider alternatives if…
- They want a fixed route to Higher Education. NVQs can lead to Higher Education but you’ll need to check that it’s OK with your chosen provider.
