UCAS

UCAS is responsible for processing Higher Education applications for all students who want to study in the UK. This includes applications for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and applications from mature and international students.

When you're making your application it is important to pay attention to any deadlines that are given for sending whatever information or documents they require. You can find some of these deadlines in the GC events calendar. Requirements and deadlines will vary depending on what course you apply for.

Types of Application and Key Dates

UCAS has split Higher Education courses into four main types, which all have different application processes and deadlines (key dates).

The types are Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Teacher Training, and Performing Arts courses.

If you go to the Apply section of the UCAS website you'll be able to see the key dates for each type of course.

In some cases you may need to start your application in November of the year prior to the one you wish to start studying in. For undergraduate courses you will normally have to have made your application by the middle of January to start a course the following autumn.

The UCAS website will also allow you to keep track of your application so you can reply to interview invitations and offers.

We want you to have the best chance of achieving your aim so if you need help choosing a course, or with any detail of your application to UCAS, please let us know.

Conditional Offers and Clearing

In many cases students receive offers from universities which are conditional, and rely upon you getting high enough results in your exams.

If you don't get the grades you need it may still be possible to go to university. You may be offered an alternative course by your preferred university.

If that doesn't happen, you'll need to go through 'Clearing'. You can search through UCAS for other courses which still have spaces and then apply directly to the university.

If you can't find a course that suits you, don't despair. There may be an alternative course, or you could take a gap year or seek employment. You can always apply again another year!
