Meet Alex, Property Maintenance Operative Apprentice at AV1 Building Ltd

We're gearing up for the September 2022 starts of our construction and building services apprenticeship programmes at GC. This month, we're catching up with some of our construction and building services apprentices, to see what inspired them to learn a trade and what they enjoy best about being an apprentice.

Alex Trim’s journey into his apprenticeship started after he first completed a full-time Plumbing and Electrical course at College. While looking for apprenticeship opportunities, he came across an apprenticeship vacancy with AV1 Building Ltd advertised in GlosJobs. The day after his application, he got a call, met with his employer and was offered the job.

"As a Property Maintenance apprentice, I mainly work on renovating kitchens, bathrooms and extensions. We do general building work and have projects all around Gloucestershire.

"What I love about my apprenticeship is the fact that it’s a gateway into the trade. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn and get a hands-on experience. My dad was an engineering apprentice at Delphi, so I’ve learnt from him that an apprenticeship can set you up for life.

"AV1 Building Ltd is a small company, there are only 3 of us there, but we are looking to grow. The owners are looking to bring more apprentices in; it will be an opportunity for me to help onboard and train them. I am almost at the end of my course and my plan is to stay with AV1 and help them grow the business.

"I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship – it’s the best way into the industry. You can spend a lot of time at University getting a degree, but it doesn’t guarantee you a job. With an apprenticeship, you actually get paid to come to college.

"For anyone who’s interested in an apprenticeship, but not sure where to start, I’d recommend applying for a full-time course first. You can always switch to an apprenticeship once you are clearer on the path you want to take."
