Kickstart Job Fair provided golden ticket opportunities to those wanting to gain employment.

On Wednesday 28 July, Gloucestershire college offered a unique opportunity to those aged 18 – 24 currently in receipt of universal credit.

The Kickstart scheme offers a six-month paid work placement with an exciting local employer, funded by the government. Kickstart will help reduce long-term unemployment, build the local economy and teach valuable skills to a new generation.

Our job fair was attended by over 40 local businesses who were eager to speak to those interested in Kickstart opportunities, with some employers even hiring on the day. GC has now placed almost 60 young people into employment via the Kickstart scheme across a wide range of industries, with that number set to grow.

The event was opened by gold medallist Paralympian and Wellbeing Advocate Andy Lewis MBE. Andy spoke about his own struggles with mental health as well as his journey through various stages of employment, including the challenges he faced and how they helped shape the ambitious person he is today. Andy now focusses on growing his charity “Bespoke Mentoring” which helps Young people and those with disabilities and illnesses overcome their mental health challenges.

Amie Nutbrown, Head of Commercial at Gloucestershire College, commented:

“We are absolutely delighted to host out first Kickstart job fair, we wanted to pave the way for other institutions to do the same. Gloucestershire College is very well established in the local community and has links to over 1000 local employers. It seems only right we were able to offer this event to those who want to start their career journey and speak to real employers.” 

Amie Continued: “The Kickstart Scheme is a win-win for both young people and businesses. The trainee will gain invaluable work experience helping them to get their first permanent job or decide on their career direction, whilst employers gain an enthusiastic, motivated young person for a six-month placement, bringing diversity and new ideas to their team”.
