Works underway to transform Gloucestershire College’s Cheltenham Campus for Cyber, IT and Engineering

The widely anticipated project to create Gloucestershire College’s new £3m Institute of Technology facilities at its Cheltenham campus has commenced.

The redevelopment will see the creation of a brand new cyber and IT area, with specialist computing labs, state of the art attack and defence rooms, forensic tool kits, eco study pods, a dedicated entrance and an open study and networking area. The engineering teaching and learning area is also being extensively refurbished with dedicated spaces for those studying higher level engineering in Cheltenham.

85 Kickstart roles available with Gloucestershire businesses

Gloucestershire College is delighted to announce that there are 85 vacancies available to motivated young people across Gloucestershire, through the government’s Kickstart Scheme. The new incentive, launched in October, was created to support 16 to 24-year-olds in receipt of Universal Credit, to reduce the risk of them becoming long-term unemployed. It offers a six-month paid job with a local employer, funded by the government.

How to apply for apprenticeship incentives

Any business who hires / has hired a new apprentice between 1 August 2020 and 31 March 2021 is currently eligible to receive the following incentive payments from the government of £2,000 for every new apprentice aged 16-24 and £1500 for every new apprentice aged 25 and over. This is addition to a further £1,000 if the apprentice is aged 16 to 18-years-old. Find out how to apply for these incentives, via the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS).

Gloucestershire College leading the way out of digital skills shortage ‘disaster’

The UK could face a “catastrophic gap” in digital skills warned a recent report published by the Learning and Work Institute and WorldSkills UK. Despite the report’s findings – one being that nationally, young people studying IT subjects is declining – Gloucestershire College has again bucked the trend, with an increased demand for its IT, cyber and digital courses and apprenticeships. Student applications for September 2021 starts have significantly grown across the board, with applications for the College’s university level courses – computing and digital degrees, HNCs and HNDs increasing by a massive 143% year on year. Join the local businesses making a difference to young people here in Gloucestershire through the government’s Kickstart Scheme

Local businesses have answered the call to action from Gloucestershire College to provide almost 200 Kickstart Scheme placements for young people across the county. Successful placements are underway but more employers are still encouraged to step forward. Gloucestershire College is looking for businesses of all sizes and sectors to provide six-month work placements for young people aged 16-24-years-old. The government will cover the wage and expenses associated with providing the placement, all employers have to do is provide the opportunity. Read more here.

Gloucestershire College is delighted to be the first college in England to offer a degree apprenticeship recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – a part of GCHQ, for delivering quality education and training. The Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in Cyber Security, delivered in partnership with the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), has been awarded provisional certification by the UK’s cyber experts, in the latest round of its certified degree initiative. Scale Up 4 Growth Gloucestershire Announces Free Cyber Security Workshops for Local SMEs

Businesses to now receive up to £4000 for every new apprentice hired before January 2022.

In July 2020, the government announced new incentive payments for employers to encourage the recruitment of new apprentices. Originally planned to end on 31 January 2021, the incentive payments have now been extended for a fourth time to January 2022.

The amount each business will receive for every new apprentice hired also increased to £3,000 from April 2021. With the existing £1000 incentive for taking on a 16-18 apprentice, this now means businesses will receive up to £4000 per apprentice recruited.

Gloucestershire College hailed as Apprenticeship Training Provider of the Year 2021

Gloucestershire College is thrilled to have won Training Provider of the Year at the GloucestershireLive Apprenticeship Awards for the second year running. The awards celebrate Gloucestershire’s best and brightest apprentices, as well as the organisations that enable their success. The ceremony that took place in Kingsholm Stadium on 13 October, highlighted the depth of talent currently within apprenticeship programmes across the county.

Free bite-sized tech courses available to Gloucestershire businesses

Businesses across Gloucestershire and beyond can now sign up to free modular tech courses in the Certificate of Future Technologies, a skills training programme created by the West of England Institute of Technology (WEIoT) partnership in response to local needs.
