#NAW19 Apprenticeship Case Study: Molly Potts at Hair Systems

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2019, we’re catching up with some of our brightest apprentices who are building their careers across a range of industries, and finding out how they are making a difference to the businesses from their employers.
Today we hear from Molly Potts, a Level 2 Hair apprentice at local salon Hair Systems.
What made you choose to do an apprenticeship?
I wanted more hands-on experience in a real salon, rather than studying in a classroom. I love doing hair and I wanted to start work as soon as possible. I’m currently doing a Level 2.
How did you find your employer/apply for an apprenticeship?
I looked online and found Hair Systems first, then we linked to Gloucestershire College. I attend college one day every two weeks, for the other days I am in the workplace.
What was the application/interview process?
I had an interview and a trial day. It wasn’t as daunting as I thought, everyone was very approachable.
What does your apprenticeship involve?
I greet clients and make them comfortable ahead of their appointment with refreshments. I assist other team members by washing the client’s hair and prepping them for the treatment. I also often carry out the finishing touches, styling the client’s hair after their treatment. I am gradually building relationships with our regular clients and adding to my skill set.
What is your favourite thing about the apprenticeship?
I learn better practically rather than in a classroom so I’m really enjoying the hands-on aspect of it, where I can actually put my skills into practice. I think you learn a lot more if you are in the real world of work.
What are your plans after you finish?
- Complete a Level 3 qualification
- Build more clientele here
- In the future potentially have my own salon
Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship in your industry?
Yes absolutely, I would advise people to look into it even if they aren’t sure. I am so happy I made this decision.
