I knew I wanted to build a career in computing. I was told college wouldn’t take me very far and my teachers pushed me to pick A Levels, but the Level 3 course is equivalent to A Levels and the modules meant I had a lot of options for whatever I wanted to do afterwards. My course also included AS Maths, so I got extra UCAS points too.
I’m definitely happy I did the college route. I’ve started a degree apprenticeship now and I don’t think I’d have gotten the apprenticeship if I’d gone to sixth form.
College has set me up better for working, too – work is project-based and not final-assessment based, so it led nicely into working life. I liked that I did very few exams, and I enjoyed the flexibility of my timetable as I had lots of free time to study and develop my skills.
I’m looking forward to starting my career and learning more about cyber security. Due to the nature of the work, you don’t really know what companies do until you join them. I’m looking forward to helping people and learning different sides of computing from my degree apprenticeship as well.
