  • Students

Ideal if: you want to discover the principles of structured programming from which computer programs and products are built, and develop programming skills.

You’ll learn: in the first year the basics of computing before moving on to industry-standard programming languages, such as Microsoft C# and .Net, and how to build new applications and solutions that work alongside popular operating systems

Expect: to explore the role of software developers, including how they investigate the needs of the end user before writing a program code.

You’ll love: working on real-life IT projects using the latest computer systems and technology.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Computing/IT

Students on all our Level 3 Computing pathways complete a common first year of Advanced Computing before moving on to specialise in their second year.

This course provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to progress into a career in computing and/or a computing-related course in higher education. We prepare you to become a successful professional in the computing industry

To progress onto this specialism course you must first have completed the first year of the course that introduces you to a variety of essential computing skills and software. This first year will have provided you with a good grounding to allow you to make an informed choice about your specialism.

Software Engineering and Web app Development is made up of specialised units to develop skills as outlined above.

Next steps: higher education including a HNC/D at GC, a higher apprenticeship at GC, or degree in computing, software engineering and programming.

Future career options: Programmer - Software Developer - App Developer

You’ll get the opportunity to take part in a wide range of trips and visits. In recent months our students have been to the Sky TV Academy in London; the Hydron Collider at Cern, Geneva; EGX, Birmingham - the UK largest computer Games exhibition; Bletchley Park and more. We also partner with local companies and organisations to give you experience of working with ‘live’ computing projects and enable you to work with leading professionals in the world of computing.
