This course gives you the opportunity to learn the basics of plumbing and develop some more specialist skills preparing you for your career.
If you enjoy doing practical things and you want a skill that you can use in different ways, this could be perfect course for you.
You will study:
- Hot and cold water supplies
- Central Heating
- Planning & Supervision
- Second fixing
- Using portable power tools
- health and safety
As a plumber, you may work in one or more of the following areas:
- installing and repairing water supplies, heating systems and drainage
- Installing bathroom and central heating
- Installing guttering - Soil Pipes
On all jobs you would use hand and power tools.
To become a plumber you will need to be able to follow technical drawings and plans, have good practical and problem-solving skills and a careful and well-ordered approach to work.
You'll need a reasonable level of fitness and an awareness of safety issues and legal regulations. You'll also need to be able to work as part of a team as well as alone and have good customer care skills.
To become a qualified plumber you will need to achieve a level 2 or 3 plumbing qualification. In the industry average salaries might range between £15,000 and £40,000+ for a 40-hour week (National Careers Service data 2018).
In College as in industry, you will need to wear suitable protective clothing and steel toe-capped boots or shoes.
Gloucestershire College recognises the importance of learners getting the Maths and English qualifications that they will need to be successful in their chosen career. For this reason all full-time learners who have not achieved Grade 4 and above Maths or English Language, will work towards these qualifications as part of their studies.
At Gloucestershire College we want students to develop their English and maths skills so that they achieve their learning goals and future career aims. For this reason all full-time students who have not achieved grade A* to C English language or maths GCSE will study these subjects as part of their course.
